Mysimba

Mysimba is a prescription weight-loss medicine containing naltrexone and bupropion. It is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.

It acts on areas of the brain involved in appetite and food intake. This may help reduce hunger and make it easier to manage cravings.

The dose normally increases over four weeks:

1. Week 1: one tablet in the morning
2. Week 2: one tablet morning and evening
3. Week 3: two tablets in the morning and one in the evening
4. Week 4 onwards: two tablets morning and evening

Take the tablets preferably with food and swallow them whole. Do not crush, chew or cut them.

Very common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation and headache. Other effects can include dizziness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, dry mouth and increased blood pressure. Read the leaflet and seek medical advice about severe or persistent symptoms.

It may be suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition. It is not suitable for everyone, including some people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of seizures, certain eating disorders or current opioid use. A clinician will assess your suitability.

Treatment is reviewed after 16 weeks and may be stopped if you have not lost at least 5% of your starting weight.
