Wegovy is the first prescription weight-loss medication offering once-weekly dosing.

Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide.

Wegovy is for adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) who also have weight-related medical problems, to help them lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy should be used with a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

Wegovy works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in regulating appetite and food intake. This can help you eat less, which leads to weight loss. It also delays the time it takes for your stomach to empty, so you feel fuller for longer.

In a 68-week medical study of 1,961 adults living with obesity or excess weight with a related medical problem, adults taking Wegovy lost an average of 35 pounds (16kg), or about 15% of their body weight.

People taking a placebo lost an average of 6 pounds, or approximately 2.4% of their body weight. The average starting weight for both groups was approximately 232 pounds.

In the STEP clinical trials, patients taking Wegovy started to lose weight as early as week four. While taking Wegovy, people not only lost weight but also kept it off.

You should inject Wegovy once a week, at any time of day, with or without food. You might find it helpful to establish a routine, such as taking Wegovy on a Sunday just before bed.

The Wegovy starting dose is 0.25mg injected subcutaneously on the same day each week for four weeks.

The dose is normally increased every four weeks until the maintenance dose of 2.4mg is reached.

1. Weeks 1–4: 0.25mg once weekly
2. Weeks 5–8: 0.5mg once weekly
3. Weeks 9–12: 1mg once weekly
4. Weeks 13–16: 1.7mg once weekly
5. Week 17 onwards: 2.4mg once weekly

If needed for weight management in people living with obesity, the dose may be increased to the next maintenance dose of 7.2mg once weekly after at least four weeks at 2.4mg. The maximum dose is 7.2mg once weekly.

Each package contains one Wegovy FlexTouch pen in one of five strengths: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg or 2.4mg.

The pen is used once a week for four weeks. The pack includes:

1. One Wegovy FlexTouch pen
2. Four NovoFine Plus needles
3. A patient information leaflet

Each 7.2mg pen is designed for one-time use. A pack contains four pens, providing four weeks of treatment.

Each pen has a built-in, hidden needle, so no needle changes are required. To administer the injection, remove the cap and follow the supplied instructions.

1. Pull the pen cap straight off the pen.
2. Choose an injection site on your upper arm, thigh or stomach, remaining at least 5cm from your belly button.
3. Press the pen firmly against your skin until the yellow bar begins moving.
4. Keep the pen in place until the yellow bar stops moving.
5. Do not lift the pen early, as you may not receive the complete dose.

Choose an injection site on your upper arm, thigh or stomach, keeping at least 5cm away from your belly button. You may use the same body area each week, but do not inject into exactly the same spot.

Before using each new pen for the first time, check the Wegovy flow:

1. Turn the dose selector until the flow-check symbol lines up with the dose pointer.
2. Hold the pen with the needle pointing upwards.
3. Press and hold the dose button until the counter returns to zero.
4. Check that a drop of Wegovy appears at the needle tip.
5. Turn the selector until the counter shows your prescribed dose.
6. Insert the needle into your skin without covering the dose counter.
7. Press and hold the dose button until the counter shows zero.
8. Keep the button pressed and slowly count to six before removing the needle.

If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as possible and within five days of the missed dose.

If more than five days have passed, skip the missed dose and administer your next dose on the regularly scheduled day. You can then resume your normal once-weekly schedule.

If you miss more than one dose, contact the pharmacy for advice. Restarting at a lower dose may need to be considered.

You may change your weekly injection day as long as there are at least three days—more than 72 hours—between doses. After choosing a new day, continue administering Wegovy once weekly on that day.

The Wegovy FlexTouch pen comes with four NovoFine Plus needles in the box.

The pen can be used with NovoFine Plus, NovoFine or NovoTwist disposable needles up to 8mm long.

You do not need separate needles for Wegovy 7.2mg because each single-dose pen has a built-in, hidden needle.

Before opening, store Wegovy in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C and away from the cooling element.

Do not freeze Wegovy and do not use a pen that has been frozen. Keep the cap on to protect the medicine from light.

During use, a FlexTouch pen can be kept for six weeks below 30°C or in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C.

Do not use Wegovy after its expiry date or if the solution is not clear and colourless.

Very common side effects that may affect more than 1 in 10 people include:

1. Headache
2. Nausea
3. Vomiting
4. Diarrhoea
5. Constipation
6. Stomach pain
7. Feeling weak or tired

Common side effects that may affect up to 1 in 10 people include:

1. Dizziness
2. Indigestion or an upset stomach
3. Burping
4. Flatulence
5. Bloating
6. Gastritis
7. Reflux or heartburn
8. Gallstones
9. Hair loss
10. Injection-site reactions
11. Low blood sugar in people with diabetes

Wegovy may not be recommended or may require additional caution in people who:

1. Are aged 85 or over
2. Have liver or kidney disease
3. Are hypersensitive to semaglutide or any of the ingredients
4. Have severe gastroparesis or inflammatory bowel disease
5. Have thyroid disease
6. Take warfarin or another coumarin derivative
7. Have severe heart failure or have previously had a stroke
8. Have pancreatic disease
9. Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding

People taking warfarin or another coumarin derivative may require more frequent INR monitoring when starting semaglutide.

Novo Nordisk recommends stopping Wegovy at least two months before a planned pregnancy.

Adults taking Wegovy experienced improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, supporting improvements in overall cardiovascular health.
