Wegovy Tablet

The Wegovy tablet is a once-daily prescription GLP-1 medication containing semaglutide.

It is indicated for weight management, alongside diet and exercise, in adults living with obesity with a BMI of 30 or above, or adults who are overweight with a BMI of 27 or above and at least one weight-related medical condition.

Yes. Wegovy contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist.

The body naturally produces GLP-1, a hormone involved in regulating appetite. Wegovy acts similarly to this hormone, helping reduce appetite and calorie intake.

Wegovy mimics GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone involved in appetite and food-intake regulation.

By targeting areas of the brain that control hunger, it helps reduce appetite and calorie intake. It also slows stomach emptying, helping you feel fuller for longer.

It should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and sustainable lifestyle changes.

In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, participants taking Wegovy tablets alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost an estimated average of 13.6% of their starting weight over 64 weeks.

The estimated average was 16.6% when assessing the effect if participants remained on treatment as intended. Individual results vary.

Treatment normally increases gradually:

1. Month 1: 1.5mg once daily
2. Month 2: 4mg once daily
3. Month 3: 9mg once daily
4. Month 4 onwards: 25mg once daily

Your clinician will assess how you respond to treatment. Do not increase or change your dose unless instructed.

1. Take your tablet on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours.
2. Swallow it whole with a small amount of plain water—up to 120ml.
3. Do not split, crush or chew the tablet.
4. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines.

Waiting less than 30 minutes may reduce the absorption of semaglutide.

Skip the missed dose and take your usual dose the following day.

Do not take two tablets to compensate for a missed dose, as this may increase side effects without providing additional benefit.

Side effects are most common when beginning treatment or increasing the dose and may improve as your body adjusts.

Common side effects may include:

1. Nausea
2. Diarrhoea
3. Vomiting
4. Constipation
5. Abdominal pain
6. Headache
7. Tiredness
8. Indigestion
9. Dizziness
10. Bloating
11. Belching
12. Flatulence
13. Heartburn
14. Gastroenteritis
15. Hair loss
16. Changes in skin sensation
17. Low blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes

Keep the tablets in their original blister packaging to protect them from moisture.

Store them out of the sight and reach of children, and do not use them after the expiry date printed on the blister and carton.

Some people may regain weight after stopping weight-management medication.

Obesity is a chronic condition, so ongoing treatment and lifestyle support may be needed to maintain results. Do not stop taking Wegovy without discussing it with your clinician.

Plateaus are a normal part of weight loss. As your weight decreases, your body needs fewer calories, so the calorie deficit that initially produced weight loss becomes smaller.

Changes in metabolism, activity levels, eating habits and fluid retention can also affect progress. Reviewing portion sizes, snacks and overall calorie intake may help.

Prioritising protein, fibre-rich foods, physical activity and consistent routines can support continued progress. Speak to your clinician if your weight remains unchanged or you are concerned about treatment effectiveness.

Do not take Wegovy if you are allergic to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients.

Tell your clinician before treatment if you:

1. Have type 2 diabetes
2. Have diabetic eye disease
3. Have experienced pancreatitis
4. Have gastroparesis or another serious digestive condition
5. Have kidney, liver or thyroid problems
6. Take warfarin, insulin or other diabetes medicines
7. Are due to undergo surgery or deep sedation
8. Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding

Wegovy should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy.

Weekly wellness sessions take place on Saturdays at 10am.

Switching may be possible, but it must be assessed and directed by a qualified prescriber.

Wegovy injections and tablets both contain semaglutide, but the doses are not directly interchangeable. Your starting tablet dose will depend on your current treatment, how long you have used it, your response and any side effects.

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a different active ingredient. Switching from Mounjaro therefore requires an individual clinical assessment and a prescriber-approved dosing plan.
